Hearings Not Open on Gillette Livestock Bill
Senator Guy M. Gillette has not opened hearings on his bill to bar direct livestock buying by packers. He says the Justice Department is developing evidence in grand jury meat-industry cases that may illuminate the issue. The measure would ban packers from buying cattle except at posted stockyards, not affecting feeders or unfinished stock.

Officials say government purchases under lend-lease and surplus marketing programs have little impact on the usual price gap between Chicago and Missouri river hog markets. The spread has narrowed as western buyers extend eastward and drought reduces western hog supply, with prices rising to levels seen in 1916 and 1917.
