Cedar Rapids school district borrows to cover operating costs
Cedar Rapids Community School District borrowed about 114 million dollars this year to keep operating as tax collections lag, with 12 393.79 dollars in interest. Secretary Ed Lundquist notes past similar deficits and transfers from the school house fund helped reduce interest in earlier years. He warns transfers paused until Iowa attorney general clarifies law. Taxes late due to a lawsuit over 1962 area taxes, city victory in district court with Iowa supreme court appeal pending. District expects similar debt risk next year.
