Okinawa victory and wage reform debate sweep headlines
By HARRY BOYD, the Okinawa campaign is declared complete though some mopping up remains. It costs nearly 7,000 American lives and about 30,000 wounded or missing as it nears a base for a future major assault on Japan. The windup hints at surrender trends under Japanese officers and possible shifts in tactics. The text also covers William H. Davis proposing wage hikes from 40 to 50 cents, with up to 65 cents in textiles, amid reconversion woes and unemployment benefits debates. It discusses inflation risks, postwar wage realities, and contrasting policies associated with Roosevelt and Dewey, plus a clipping about rude caller etiquette in business phone practices.

Master war-criminal trial eyed for late summer in Britain
Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson said the major war criminals including Hermann Goering and Joachim von Ribbentrop could be tried in a single group before a military tribunal late this summer. He emphasized it is an American plan, not a binding one for Britain France or Russia, and that the trial would be conducted like a court martial with judges from allied nations. The number of defendants is uncertain, likely between 35 and 100, with indictments relying on UN war crimes dossiers and the Kellogg Briand pact as the legal basis. Russia has not committed to joining, though no objection was raised when the plan was discussed in San Francisco.
