National Guard on Active Duty and War Strategy Debate
The War Department recommends extending National Guard active duty beyond one year, arguing a small well trained force is better than a larger half trained one. A national emergency declaration may be needed to sustain this. In Cedar Rapids a new Ellis Park pool opens as a community recreational milestone. Secretary Stimson pushes consolidation of air forces under army control to form a single defense structure. German coordination suggests a supreme staff could improve U S defense. Lincoln’s Gettysburg line prompts reflection on democracy and the people’s role. Henry Ford shifts to closed shop amid defense needs and pressure.
