Simon Estes breaks barriers with global opera career
Centerville native Simon Estes, 83, recalls early discrimination that led him to Europe. He debuted in 1965 as Ramfis in Aida at Deutsche Opera Berlin, launching a 102 role, 84 house career with 115 orchestras under 90 conductors including Bernstein and Ormandy. He has sung for presidents and leaders, noting Juneteenth as progress but calls for full equality still needed. Iowa man seeks removal from sex offender registry
