Veterans warn that President Obama’s pledge that up to 300 military advisers will avoid combat may be unworkable as Iraqi forces cede territory to Islamist militants. Former troops say Green Berets and other special operators could end up embedded with Iraqi units and drawn into fighting.

Immigration detention centers to address border surge

Obama administration officials announced plans Friday to detain and process a surge of families crossing from Central America. They will open temporary detention centers in Texas and send more immigration judges and government lawyers to the Rio Grande Valley to speed cases, while also using alternatives to detention such as ankle monitors. Deputy Secretary Alejando Mayorkas stressed humane detention and noted 39,000 adults with children and 52,000 unaccompanied children have been apprehended since October. The White House move followed a Boehner letter blaming policies for the surge.
