Corrupt guard corporal testifies on Stewart death in Nicaragua
In Managua a National Guard corporal Lorenzo Brenes testified at a military tribunal that ABC photographer Bill Stewart was killed by Pvt Gonzales who was later killed in combat. Brenes claimed he did not know Gonzales and suggested he was not at the roadblock. Witness Pablo Tiffer Lopez cited a guard remark insulting the journalist. Stewart and interpreter were slain at a roadblock as ABC crews filmed the shooting. The incident followed a hostile editorial accusing foreign journalists of communist propaganda. Somoza pledged the killings were an isolated incident.
