Rough Going in Chile For Marxist Allende
UPI reports Chilean President Allende, the region’s only freely elected Marxist leader, struggles to implement socialism amid 40 percent inflation, a split with the Communists, MIR activity, and labor unrest. Cabinet changes drop economy minister Vuskovic, intensifying pressures as copper strikes and by-elections test his government. Allende denounces an American blockade while seeking lawful path to reform, but lacks a congressional majority.
