Networks struggle to clear public affairs with local stations

New York networks face criticism for failing to clear public affairs programs with local stations. A Columbia Journalism Review survey from February 1964 shows about 30 percent of network news and public affairs content was rejected by stations, up from 25 percent in 1962. NBC affiliates notably blocked most coverage of the Kennan hearings, while CBS and ABC outlets also declined substantial Vietnam coverage, highlighting a bias in local refusals. Reruns of I Love Lucy and The Real McCoys persist on CBS daytime slots, even as color TV looms and other black and white series face retirement.
