Police reported overturned cars, buildings burned, and National Guardsmen contesting about 5,000 rioting motorcycle fans. at least 40 held in jails facing riot act charges carrying up to 1000 dollar fines and three years imprisonment.
Evangelist Billy Graham concluded an eight day Alabama revival appealing for unity and racial kindness to about 18 000 attendees. A riot in Montgomery Saturday near Kilby Prison injured nearly 100 and caused extensive property damage as Hell's Angels motorcycle club clashed with police and crowds.
Alberta M Burgess 43 of Huron Iowa died Sunday in a Rochester Minnesota hospital after a long illness. She was born July 2 1922 on a Martelle farm and married Cleve Burgess in 1956. Survived by husband two sons Gary Hartley and Mark Burgess and brother Maynard York. Burial at Norwich Cemetery near Martelle with services in Springville Murdoch chapel to be announced.
Police used tear gas smoke bombs clubs and rock salt to break up a 2000 strong motorcycle crowd near Whalom Park after tips of converging groups. In Laconia a church sign welcomed cyclists as tensions eased.
A Sunday morning crash near Williamsburg, Missouri killed six people including Ira Lonnie Louvin and his wife Anne. The Louvin Brothers former members of the Grand Ole Opry were returning from Kansas City when their car collided with another vehicle. Also killed were Billy Barksdale and his wife Adelle, plus Tommy Franklin and Luther Daniels from St. Louis.
In Montgomery Alabama a 25 year old convicted burglar won first prize for his painting. A convicted forger sold the most paintings as part of the event.
Commissioner Frank Lee described the Kilby Prison art show as pleasant and new. Twelve inmates displayed paintings from an in-prison art class run by Mrs. William Holman. About 65 to 70 visitors attended the event.
Des Moines Iowa Bronday of the Iowa supreme court scheduled a hearing for Wednesday at 10 am on an expedited appeal from a Polk county district court ruling in a reapportionment case. Justice C Edwin Moore said the session will occur in court chambers. David Belin of Des Moines represents plaintiffs seeking subdistricting of counties with multiple senators or representatives under the temporary plan. District Court Judge Harry Perkins upheld the state AGs claim that state courts lack jurisdiction while the same matter is pending before a U S district court.
