UN Volunteer Group Keeps Working Without Pay

In New York, 300 women are on a waiting list for volunteer roles at the UN Volunteer Services Organization. About 20 unsalaried workers run a unit that assists 3,000 Secretariat staff with travel, schools, camps, and cultural tickets. Most volunteers are affluent, educated women who contribute two full days weekly, with long tenures and no promotion prospects. They help staff navigate the city and World affairs while serving on personal time, often skipping events like General Assembly sessions due to their duties.
