American Cancer Society findings show cigarette smokers aged 50 to 70 have higher death rates from all causes, heart disease, and cancer, with those smoking a pack a day or more facing notably greater risks. Data drawn from 187,766 men interviewed in 1952 and results from 4,854 deaths within 20 months.
Former President Harry S. Truman, 70, in satisfactory condition after emergency appendectomy and gall bladder removal. Dr. Wallace Graham says he should be able to leave Research Hospital in about ten days if recovery continues. Truman sat in a chair briefly and declined fuss. Margaret Truman to debut in Autun Crocus at Pocono Playhouse tonight as planned after consulting with her mother.
A vast Soviet air show featured 660 aircraft including a MIG-17 fighter and a wing flapping glider. About 250,000 spectators and Western diplomats attended the Aviation Day parade marking the annual celebration. The four jet intercontinental bomber shown on May Day did not appear.

The New York World Telegram and Sun reported a secret two year probe by CCNY president Buell Gallagher found more than a dozen players on Nat Holman’s CCNY teams admitted by fraud. High school records were forged to enroll unqualified athletes, with one academic official paid $1000 yearly to assist talented players with limited academic ability.
London report says the Duke of Kent, 18, cousin of Queen Elizabeth, moved toward recovery after sustaining severe injuries in an automobile crash on Monday.
United Nations dispatch reports U S Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr bluntly warned Russia to stay out of the Western Hemisphere during a Security Council session over Guatemala. Lodge denounced Soviet vetoes and urged immediate end to bloodshed while Guatemala pressed for action against Nicaragua and Honduras.
Milford Fitzgerald, 28, was trapped eight days in a sealed railroad car loaded with lumber in Washington state before being freed after a hobo reported a noise. Dehydrated, he was hospitalized in poor but improving condition and later muttered that he was very hungry.
In Indianapolis a bel ligerent squirrel attacked resident Bessie Wilson, biting her leg before two policemen used nightsticks to subdue the animal. The creature then routed a nearby dog as it charged through the yard.

In Chicago Montgomery Ward Thorne's fiancée Maureen Ragen testified at an inquest that the 20 year old heir to a million was arrested 18 months ago as a dope addict. Police found a makeshift syringe marijuana a sleeping pill and a tea spoon with a flame burned bowl in his studio apartment where Thorne was found dead. The coroner said there were four needle marks on his arms and ordered organ tests. Thorne had recently changed his will naming Miss Ragen as chief beneficiary and executor. The estate would provide $1000 a month at 21 rising to $3000 at 30 with remainder divided among relatives including one eighth to his mother.
Police found fourteen badly damaged stolen cars in an abandoned mine shaft near Wilkes-Barre. John O Boyle, 20, was arrested in connection with the case as the cars were disposed of in the pit over the past seven months. Hope O Boyle had hundreds of dollars in auto accessories at their home.
Washington AP reports a house senate conference committee announced agreement on an appropriation bill totaling 457071200 for army civil functions all for navigation and river project construction funds. Key item Coralville reservoir is listed with 11490 in the allocations.
Geneva AP report says China holds 30 American civilians in prison and notes that a number listed as detained by the U.S. are dead or missing. It cites deaths of W. L. Winter, a missionary, and three airmen, P. E. Voorhis H. D. Weese and A. D. Hart Jr., with Harold Fischer Jr. also identified as a military prisoner. The fate of others remains unresolved.
Quaker Oats announced in Chicago that Thomas B. Bartel will become Cedar Rapids plant manager effective July 1, succeeding E J Petranek who retires. Bartel, 38, has worked for Quaker eight years, most recently as a plant trainer and assistant manager at Cedar Rapids, with prior posts in Akron and personnel relations.
DES MOINES AP reports rapid rise in temporarily homeless Iowa families as new cloudbursts hit overnight. Fort Dodge Mason City Sioux City Webster City listed as high danger zones. National guardsmen deployed on flood duty at select locations.
Des Moines river basin south of Fort Dodge braces for record flooding with a forecast crest of 26.5 feet at Des Moines by Friday, tying the 1947 peak. Four Mile creek flash flood receded, Boone expected to crest 21 to 21.5 feet, surpassing the 1947 high. Eighty youths were stranded at the YWCA camp but reported safe.
