UI aids Mars radar probe for subsurface water search
Rockwell Collins assisted in building a ground penetrating radar for the Mars Express mission. The instrument, MARSIS, uses a 160-foot fiberglass antenna and a 1 000 volt transmitter to probe water beneath the surface to depths up to five kilometers. The UI project team notes the system adapts military digital transmission tech for space use and aims to return data over nearly two Martian years.
