Supreme Court preserves key parts of waste law
The Supreme Court on a 9 0 vote upholds the 1993 deadline under the Low Level Radioactive Waste Act of 1985 requiring states to find or build disposal dumps. It also allows states with dumps to block out of state shipments, while striking down after 1996 a provision making noncompliant states liable for all their wastes. Iowa officials welcome the ruling aiding a Midwest compact with Ohio and others.
