Home improvement scams target summer homeowners
The Iowa AG and Labor Department warn that spring and summer bring more contractors. Unregistered workers face on site fines and possible civil charges. Mediation helps some cases while others become criminal, with theft and forgery among possible charges and county attorneys often needed.
Homeowners advised to ask questions before hiring contractors
The Linn County Extension Service urges checking references and calling them, using established local contractors, and ensuring the contractor will be available for issues. It recommends breaking payments into thirds and obtaining written contracts as the only enforceable protection in court.

Couple seeks rehearing after Iowa City airport ruling
Dean and Phyllis Fitzgarrald plan a rehearing after the Iowa Supreme Court favoured the city of Iowa City and Johnson County in a suit over airport operations. Represented by William Meardon, they challenged a zoning ordinance tied to a runway extension begun in 1984. The couple owns a 10 acre site and mobile home park near the airport.
