Des Moines pilot study fuels plan to uproot gardens
Governor Robert Ray voiced skepticism Tuesday about tearing up the Japanese gardens south of the Statehouse to build a new historical structure. The Iowa Capitol Planning Commission outlined benefits, noting the site atop a decaying viaduct and proposing underground use for climate control. Commission members argued the project could preserve artifacts and create distinctive beauty, while critic Gordon Lange warned of high viaduct costs and limited office space if the gardens remain. Ray agreed to further review plans but said the idea does not grab him.
