Ellis Park pool opens amid cautious optimism in Cedar Rapids

The Ellis Park municipal pool in Cedar Rapids opened on a warm Thursday with light first day attendance. Built in 1940 for about $60,000 with a $53,000 bond issue and a Young Men's Bureau gift, the pool operates on a cash basis and has run a self-funded budget. Manager Nels Lee oversees a staff of about 15, with lifeguards like Shirley Long and Don Lehmkuhl, maintenance by Richard McGowan, and various support workers. The Red Cross led by Jim Gilchrist aids in safety and training, with city and Red Cross instructors. Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls will later use the facilities. The pool measures 165 by 164.5 feet, excluding the children’s area.
