Study questions value of vocational courses
A UCLA education professor challenges the belief that vocational education expands opportunity. The study tracked 1,576 students over 28 months across 50 schools in four cities, finding dropouts higher among disadvantaged students and little evidence that vocational training raised earnings, except for women in traditional female fields. Some proprietary schools recruited unqualified students, but most performed better than public schools in preparing students for low level jobs at lower costs.
