In-Depth Study Pushes Afghan Invasion Viewed as Planned Months Ahead
The International Institute for Strategic Studies says the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was planned at least four months in advance and a rapid withdrawal is unlikely. It estimates a much larger force of 250,000 to 400,000 would be needed to pacify guerrillas, with ongoing Soviet involvement in Kabul. The report also notes potential Iranian realignment with the West and broader East–West arms talks remaining difficult.
