Nixon nominates Brunthauer to farm post amid quiet Senate path

President Nixon moves to nominate Carroll G. Brunthauer as assistant secretary for farm policy with a background in agribusiness research and administration. Farm groups show little opposition after cautious early pushback over past ties to industry. Senate Agriculture Committee plans a swift voice-vote confirmation next week without a public hearing. Brunthauer, 40, a university trained economist, previously held roles at MSU, Grain and Feed Dealers National Association, Cook and Co affiliate, and ASCS, contributing to the flexible surplus control program introduced in 1970.
