President Eisenhower signaled he would welcome a limited suspension of atomic tests with the Soviet Union but warned against a blanket or unconditional halt. He emphasized tying any pact to broader disarmament goals and noted Stassen’s role and the need for careful study of current proposals.
Japanese officials warned the decision blocking a Japanese trial for William Girard threatens the U S Japan mutual security treaty unless the U S Supreme Court reverses. Justice Minister Nakamura said the district court ruling isn’t binding and the trial will proceed. Yuzo Kawachi said the trial could open mid August, pending orders.
Two oil tankers, the Stony Point flying under Siberian papers and the Greek tanker Ioannis, collided in darkness and fog off Brest Brittany. Eight sailors died and more than 50 were rescued with 10 seriously injured. Rescue ships navigated through fog fearing explosions. No missing reported.
Camp Good Health will open Thursday for Linn County children not strong enough for other camps. Manager A T Pleune and staff started work Monday, with good weather aiding final setup. Pasadena report says J R Williams, 69, creator of the cartoon Out Our Way, died Monday night after a relapse following a recent operation. A heart ailment complicated by post operative condition was listed as the cause. Williams had long contributed Out Our Way to The Gazette.
The French Caravelle jet airliner concluded a 13,000 mile transcontinental tour that touched 17 cities across 11 states on Tuesday.
Senator Harry Byrd leads the Senate Finance Committee questioning Treasury Secretary Humphrey over claims the administration reduced debt and spending. Byrd notes the national debt rose from 265.4 billion in 1953 to 274.2 billion, and that 1958 budget totals differ by 1.8 billion due to highway spending. He contrasts wartime 1953 with peacetime 1958 budgets and cites past promises by Eisenhower. Humphrey concedes the debt rise and provides a new valuation of holdings, while offering to refile the stock list.
In New York the stock market posted its steepest declines since February 11 as technical breaks hit support levels. The day saw an estimated 2.48 billion dollars wiped from listed stock values.
Grace Sebastian said thieves drained her car over six weeks taking a $100 watch, $80 in cash, $100 in liquor and gasoline. She noted the final straw was seven books of trading stamps, provoking her anger and prompting police involvement.
Norman Lloyd Chesmore 16 of Center Point died after diving in shallow water at Dudgeon lake near Vinton. Coroner cites a broken neck as the cause. Chesmore and nine others drove to the lake. he mistook shallow water for deep. Funeral services set for Friday at 2 p.m. at Murdoch funeral home Center Point.
Francis Smith, 39, collapsed after a heroic tenement rescue and was revived at an ambulance ceremony in New York. Mayor Wagner pinned two medals on him as he honored his courage in rescuing a woman from flames.
Soviet scientist Yevgeni Fedorov said the USSR faces many difficulties before its artificial satellite can be completed. He noted they will surely overcome these issues and launch during the geophysical year starting July 1, but declined to give a target date.

Cross told reporters he expects vindication as he heads to testify before the senate rackets committee amid questions about beatings of women, misuse of union funds, and substandard wage contracts. The panel probed loans totaling more than 100000 from Zion Industries figures and other alleged personal uses of union money.
The Cedar Rapids Marion United Fund signed an agency contract with the United Fund of Iowa, joining seven agencies in total. The Linn County Heart Committee declined participation citing American Heart Association policy, though it will cooperate to support campaigns.
