Did Reuther Really Gain Big Victory
Article analyzes Walter Reuther and the Ford and General Motors guaranteed wage plans. It argues the plan costs the companies little direct cash over three years and that wage increases and fringe benefits dwarf the guaranteed wage, with pensions and insurance costs rising steeply. It contrasts take-home pay under the plan with state unemployment subsidies and concludes the guaranteed wage may be a fringe benefit rather than a major victory.
