River Patrol Saved from Dismantling in Cedar Rapids
The Cedar Rapids River Patrol will not be disbanded, shifted to Linn County Sheriff’s Office reserve officers for this year. The patrol, once cut due to budget constraints, gains new use of a john boat funded by a Homeland Security grant and will cover Ellis Park and extend to sections of the Cedar River and Wapsipinicon River, boosting interagency cooperation and public safety. Heroes highlighted include Krista Rettkowski of the Cedar Rapids Jaycees Toys for Tots and volunteers with several groups, Sheila Harman aiding cancer patients, Art Roderick teaching robotics, Charles Larson Sr a former U.S. attorney, Alvin Ousim honoring veterans, and Jeff Smith and his wife who saved a swimmer during a rip tide incident in Florida.
