Cedar Rapids police begin a trial of 12 hour shifts with flash yellow main streets and red cross streets at midnight. Officers report the new plan saves time crossing the city while posing long overnight hours and a rotating patrol roster across seven platoons.
Gov. Tom Vilsack outlined a plan to replace the longevity based pay with a results and training driven system. He urged changes during the 2001 session and said reforms could be funded by reallocating resources without tax increases. He expects a design by Aug. 1 and a budget plan for fiscal 2002.
Nearly 100 pre 1960 vehicles rolled into Iowa City for the Great Race 4000 mile 14 day rally from Boston to Sacramento. Rex Gardner winner of the last two years in his 1917 Hudson Indy Racer said the cars are meant for driving not display. Organiser Tom McRae showcased the Granatelli Rocket Car built in 1934 for the Indy 500 attracting throngs of locals.
E Iowa nurse and speech pathologist Maurice Cashman’s daughter, 33, ran 26.2 miles along Lake Superior in Duluth Minnesota to honor her father who has battled heart disease for a decade. She drew the word Pop on her hand and said the finish symbolized walking with him since he can no longer run.
