SKATE reveals plan for Ellis Park ice rink with lodge design

SKATE Inc unveils architect drawings for an indoor rink at Ellis Park. The facility will host ice and inline skating, hockey, and other sports, with a 100 by 200 foot outdoor area and seating for about 500. Costs are estimated at 2.25 to 2.5 million, aided by a 750000 matching grant from Hall Perrine Foundation, with construction hoped to begin by mid July and finish by late November.

Robbed couple suspect link to ex foster child

A rural Ely couple was robbed by four masked youths on Palisades Access Road. The four suspects, including two Cedar Rapids teens, were charged with first degree robbery after deputies stopped their vehicle at Ivanhoe and Joppa roads. The Straits suspect a former foster youth related to the pair inspired the crime.

Estrogen lowers Alzheimer risk in large study

Federal researchers report that estrogen replacement therapy in postmenopausal women reduces Alzheimer's risk by more than half. The 16 year study of 472 women, published in Neurology, marks the first long term analysis of estrogen’s effects on the disease with more than four million Americans affected.

Grade of C not average at colleges

University of Iowa records show a 2.81 mean GPA for 1995 96 first semester, well above the traditional C average of 2.00. Registrar Jerald Dallam says grade inflation is redefining average, with employers and programs increasingly considering school reputation test scores and overall coursework in admissions and hiring.

Developing El Nino may disrupt weather

NOAA reports a developing El Nino is likely to bring cooler and wetter conditions to the southern United States from November to March while the northern states from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Northwest may see warmer than normal temperatures. The 1982 83 event caused about 1500 deaths and up to 8 billion dollars in damage.
