New York AP report says the University of Illinois Student Rehabilitation Center captured the team championship for the third consecutive year in the sixth national wheelchair games. Illinois scored 164 points, while Bulova Watchmakers of New York finished with 1194 points.
Ed Bressoud two run triple and homers by Pete Runnels and Frank Malzone boosted the Red Sox past San Francisco behind Ike Delock. Tom Haller three run homer gave the Giants a win. Harvey Haddix struck out 10 to beat the Braves. Don Demeter and Roy Sievers powered a Phillies attack to defeat Cincinnati and Jim O’Toole.
A. D. Snodgrass of Cedar Rapids finished third in the opening heat at Quad-City Raceway in East Moline on a Saturday night program. Vern Weber of Waterloo won the feature event.
Baseball briefs from multiple leagues report varied results. Highlights include Denver 4-3 over India, Omaha 5, llas-Ft 27, and Veracruz 64 defeating Mexico City Tigers 5-5. Several games feature weather delays and incomplete scores across the Pacific Coast and Texas Leagues.
Delhi defeats Hopkinton 7 2 in a Delaware County league baseball feature. A two run error in the bottom of the fifth inning provided the decisive runs for Delhi while Henderson Miephene Raser and Heilers contributed for Central Point and Hopkinton suffered their first loss.
Williamsburg defeated Watkins 7-4 as John Willenborg pitched a seven hitter in the lone East Central low league game. Iowa City earned a win by forfeit over Belle Plaine.
Dyersville defeated Maquoketa Valley 11 to 7 to extend its streak to nine conference victories. The game featured players named Schuster Sigworth Kramer Potts and Bailey among others as Holy Cross protested a prior matchup.
Cedar Rapids Junior Legion beat Galesburg 6-1 in the first game and 14-5 in the nightcap. Larry Coufal pitched a four hitter with 11 strikeouts to win game one, while Doug Winders allowed eight hits in game two as Cedar Rapids jumped to a 10-1 lead in the first three innings. Bob Kitterman and Dick Schley led the offense with two hits apiece in the opener and Steve Crowbaugh added two in the second. Cedar Rapids improves to 4-0.
About 200 fans attended a quarter midget race on the asphalt Hawkeye Downs track as John reported. Local spectators enjoyed a sunny afternoon of junior racing with young drivers competing for trophies.
