Basques and Asturian anarchists claim to have captured 2000 Italian prisoners along the Biscay coast near Bilbao as rebels press a seaside assault. Amelia Earhart lands in Calcutta at 3 46 p m local time after a 1400 mile flight from Karachi lasting eight hours and 21 minutes. She plans a dawn departure for Bangkok Siam and spent the afternoon at Dum Dum airdrome fine tuning her airplane.

Mrs Helen Tiernan aged 28 pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the slaying of her seven year old daughter. The court awaits sentencing with a potential term of 20 years to life in prison.
In the American League Chicago and Boston split a doubleheader with varied run outputs, Stratton and Shea leading for Boston in one game and Whitehill, Heving, and teammates for Chicago securing the other. Detroit at Washington and St. Louis at Philadelphia were postponed by rain. In the National League Philadelphia defeated St. Louis while New York visited Pittsburgh. Boston at Chicago also postponed by rain.
R A Kuever a pharmacy professor at the University of Iowa was appointed dean of the college to succeed Wilber J Teeters. Teeters will remain on the faculty. Kuever joined the faculty in 1907 became professor in 1925 and earned a PhD from Iowa in 1907 and 1911. Teeters has been at Iowa since 1895 born October 10 1866 in Alliance Ohio.
Berlin reports a diplomatic crisis between Nazi Germany and Czechoslovakia over alleged police torture of a German citizen in Prague. Hitler has signaled moves to pressure Prague, with Berlin ready to lodge a stern protest and demand satisfaction.
Maytag washing machine plant in Newton suspends operations in all production areas affecting about 2,500 workers after a morning sitdown by paint unit staff. CIO says a meeting is planned Saturday and plant picketing could begin Monday if no settlement is reached. Company says the shutdown stems from unwarranted conduct by a few despite a CIO pact signed June 11 and no wage or hour disputes.

Secretary Morgenthau urged continued publicity from the joint Senate House inquiry into tax evasion and avoidance. He said remedial legislation may be needed as devices to dodge taxes have grown in recent years. He criticized what he called an honorable attitude toward avoidance and noted a names list may be submitted later.
C H Woods age 25 general manager of Zenith coal mine was shot to death in an ambush in Jamestown Tennessee. Thomas Ross 18 commissary clerk was injured when snipers fired on the same truck. Ross reported bullets came from both sides along the highway during the strike torn area.
Mayme Clark a 21 year old farm wife was found shot in her Benton county home near Boswell Indiana. Sheriff Amos Senesac reported the husband LeRoy Clark 23 was arrested and taken to Lafayette for questioning. The body lay in bed with a chest wound beside a three month old baby and a two year old son. State police claimed Clark confessed to the shooting.
Des Moines AP Iowa crop conditions show recovery from earlier setbacks and optimism for unusually favorable yields. Leslie M. Carl notes eastern Iowa maintaining normal feed supplies while southern and western counties expect sufficient feed to carry livestock through winter. Rust appears unlikely to significantly cut winter wheat yields, with prospects for one of the state's largest per acre averages.
Paris reports Bela Kun, former Hungarian communist dictator, shot in Russia. Recent notes say the fugitive, once jailed in Moscow, was captured there after fleeing much of Europe. Kun built a notorious reputation as a leading communist promoter across Europe following the 1919 upheavals.
