Bird flu harms many animals but not all species
The current bird flu has killed millions of wild and domestic birds and affected seals, foxes, cats, dogs and even a polar bear, while sparing most people. Experts cite species differences in infection pathways and cellular receptors, with cows largely spared though dairy outbreaks occur. Researchers warn of possible shifts in virulence or transmissibility and stress vigilance, vaccines, and animal testing to prevent a future pandemic.
