Tiger Woods needed a 19th hole to win the U S Open playoff at Torrey Pines after an 18th hole fight on three days. Rocco Mediate, the runner up, said Woods is hard to beat as Woods matched eagle and birdie pushes to force a playoff and then claim victory.
Mediate led Woods through 18 holes of the final round before late misfires on Sunday and Monday. Mediate drove into rough and bunker trouble while Woods seized a 30-foot eagle putt on Saturday and a tense 4-foot par putt on Sunday to clinch the dramatic finish.
