Killen leaves court on stretcher in murder trial
Edgar Ray Killen, 80, a former Ku Klux Klansman, was transported from the Philadelphia Mississippi courtroom on a stretcher and hospitalized with high blood pressure on opening day of his trial for the 1964 killings of civil rights workers James Chaney Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman. Rita Schwerner Bender testified about finding the burned station wagon, recalling the moment she feared her husband was dead. The trial recessed as Killen, who arrived in a wheelchair after a woodcutting accident, may be released after doctors evaluate his condition.
