Lawsuit prompts police procedure change in sex offender notices
Mary Churchill sued Marion police in Linn County District Court seeking one dollar after notices wrongly stating a sex offender lived in her apartment. The suit was dropped in January after police admitted no offender resided there and apologized. The department revised verification, requiring detectives to confirm addresses and retry contact within 24 hours. Churchill’s attorney said she performed a public service and did not pay fees.
