Hawkins and Lightfoot stir Iowa party tides in ticket picks

DES MOINES AP Almo Hawkins, the surprising running mate choice of Republican gubernatorial nominee Jim Lightfoot, is a former Democrat who switched to vote in this month’s GOP primary. State records show she voted Democratic in 1996, sparking bipartisan controversy alongside Sally Pederson’s reported Republican-leaning activity. Lightfoot dismisses the flap, citing common party switching, while Pederson’s past contributions to Joy Corning’s campaign add to the political balancing act ahead of the race.
