Methane From Cedar Rapids Sewage Stands as Limited Energy Option
At the Burlington street plant Cedar Rapids, sewage is digested to methane gas used to fuel an incinerator heat building and drive a generator. Officials say the gas is 60 percent methane and 40 percent carbon dioxide and cannot meet the city’s total demand. The plant saves about $75,000 annually but cannot supply mass energy due to material limits and heat output compared with natural gas.
