Ruling Curtails Farm Business in Iowa Counties
Iowa Attorney General Evan Hultman ruled that a county board of supervisors cannot contract with a farm cooperative in which any board member owns stock. The decision affects many counties with Farm Bureau Federation ties and could apply to other stockholding public entities. Lucas County had bid on gasoline from Farm Service Co. with two supervisors owning stock, deferring the contract amid legal questions.

Protests to Cedar Rapids Council Over Garden Apartment Plan
About a dozen neighbors urged the Cedar Rapids city council to deny a rezoning from R-1 to R-3 6 for a garden apartment project on Glass Road. Don Wimner plans 10 buildings with 10 units each on 11% hillland, six two bedroom and four one bedroom units, rental from 140 to 155 dollars. The plan faces opposition citing single family zoning and potential precedent, while supporters say the city needs this housing option. The council will review the arguments and assess neighbor objections and residency patterns before deciding.
