Ebola prep costs for UIHC total over six figures
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics spent more than 641 409 preparing to treat an Ebola patient including 135 168 for operational expenses and 505 512 for equipment. They also spent 729 preparing a provisional patent application for gear they created as part of a bio emergency program now aimed at tackling SARS and MERS. Hospital officials say the program will become permanent to address any infectious disease in the future. The project involved nurses, physicians, housekeeping staff and ambulance operators, with in house protective hood gear and UV disinfection robots among the purchases.
