Fire guts Tiffin home
Tiffin resident Ricki Cassill returned home to find a fire destroying a single story ranch at 4018 Ivy Ave SW. The family safe with her son's ashes was recovered, no injuries were reported, and investigators say the blaze did not appear suspicious. Fire crews from multiple departments worked for hours, leaving around 8:30 PM.

Illinois officer pleads not guilty in underage sex case
An Illinois police officer, Donald W. Rager, 40, of Grayslake, pleaded not guilty in Cedar Rapids federal court to two counts of traveling in interstate commerce to engage in sexual conduct with a minor. Trial set for August 13. He allegedly contacted a 13-year-old in Dubuque, took him to an inn, and recorded the sexual acts.

Tragic drowning halts canoe trip on Turkey River
Regional roundup reports 14 year old Harbaugh of Postville died after attempting to swim across the Turkey River during a canoe trip with 16 FFA students. He disappeared under water near the old railroad bridge between Clermont and Elgin around 1 p.m. Friday. Harbaugh was found about 10 minutes later, CPR started, and he was taken to Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union where he died.
