USDA market notes show Wednesday receivals of 7,000 hogs 12,000 cattle 1,000 sheep with hogs selling 25 to 50 cents higher than Monday while cattle remain largely unchanged and heavier steers ease up to 25 cents. Spring lambs strengthen though bases vary with regional quotes across Chicago LA Kansas City markets.
Tuesday market reports from Iowa indicate active demand for hogs with most categories rising. Barrows and gilts traded 25 to 50 cents higher, sow values uneven but generally steady to 50 cents up, with weights ranging from 180 to over 500 pounds and prices from about 19.50 to 24.25 per hundredweight depending on weight class.
Cedar Rapids hog market prices posted for hogs delivered to the Cedar Rapids plant show steady levels by weight. Good butchers and good packers across weight ranges report price bands, with calf market figures and cattle listings also included alongside poultry, cheese, butter, eggs, and grain market notes.
New York AP reports a recovery movement in the afternoon cut many losses after the market touched a new average low for the year. The majority of shares were down for the day but a rally pushed a number to the plus side. Volume was about 1,400,000 shares.
Iowa crops show generally favorable prospects with about 90 percent of corn cultivated at least once. Northwest rain caused local damage but did not greatly affect the overall crop picture as of mid June. The Rev. Frederick J. Ackman, honored with an honorary D D from Cornell College, is appointed pastor of St. John's Methodist Church in Davenport. He will assume his Davenport pastorate next Sunday.
Wheat advanced sharply in late trading as demand from flour mills aided a broad grains lift led by Minneapolis and Kansas City futures. Cash prices showed No. 1 mellow wheat around 1.52 to 1.53 a bushel with various No. 3 and No. 4 grades noted, oats unchanged, barley steady.

State health department orders the Chicago Great Western Railway to halt discharging oils into Otter creek near Oelwein after a public hearing April 23. The oil dumping harms public health and fish, impairs recreation, and the railway must install approved pollution-control facilities.

A 39 year old man suffocated in a farm house fire near Iowa City early Tuesday. Officials identified him as George Boyd. The blaze caused little damage and started after Boyd fell asleep with a cigarette in his hand.
Marion post 298 American Legion met to nominate Calvin Moore for commander with election set for the July meeting. Other nominations covered first and second vice commanders and various posts, plus a pool party planned for July 13.
Miss Maureen Kenney daughter of Mr and Mrs John Kenney Marion and Pvt John D McGowan son of Mr and Mrs C J McGowan Marion were married Friday evening at the Marion Methodist church in a double ring ceremony attended by about 100 relatives and friends. The bridal party included bridesmaid Vivian Cerney and best man Gary Kenney. The couple left for Fort Belvoir after the ceremony. Mrs McGowan is a Marion High School graduate.
In Washington state a British firm English Export and Trading Company won a portion of the power equipment contract for Chief Joseph Dam after initial bid rejections. The firm secured 10 transformers for 1,761,317 dollars, while Westinghouse Electric Corporation received four generators. The bids followed objections to overseas participation amid a larger buy American debate.

Della Calkins, 70, of 114 Twenty-fifth Street Drive SE, was struck by a truck at First Avenue and Third Street E. Tuesday morning. She was taken to Mercy Hospital in good condition and held for observation. Police identified the driver as Ralph Carver, 38, of Fairfax.
