Aliens Seek Citizenship Classes in Cedar Rapids

Wanda Montz reports a surge in interest among Cedar Rapids newcomers to become U.S. citizens. Among 65 enrollees is Jarmila Charvat, 19, from Donyn Bohemia, who arrived May 28 1938 and plans to study language, government, and American life. Classes led by Alma Wright at McKinley High School, with inputs from Hayes School and community groups, reflect a broader trend of foreign-born residents pursuing citizenship amid wartime loyalties and dispersed schooling.
