Hog Market Shows Strength In Interior Run
The interior hog market in Iowa and southern Minnesota moved higher for Thursday and Friday, with butcher hogs 5 to 10 cents up Thursday and a nickel to a dime on Friday. Friday’s interior run reached 24,200 head, 1,100 below last week but well above last year. Five-day total was 126,300 head against 131,500 the prior week and 89,900 a year ago, with June so far at 336,600 head, 41 percent above mid June 1938. Trade expects lighter slaughter volumes later in June as most butcher hogs are marketed, relying on packers’ sow movement. Grassy sows remained about 20–40 percent of receipts, with quality generally inferior in marketings.
