Barn Collapse Kills Waverly Man in Maynard Area
Two men dismantling a rural barn near Maynard were trapped as the structure began to cave in. Jack Hartshorn, 78, of Waverly died at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein after rescue efforts. Paul Lehs, 69, of Maynard, was treated and released. The accident occurred on Lehs farm two miles east and three miles north of Oelwein. Hartshorn had joined to help raze the old barn for lumber and equipment they wished to retrieve inside. Firefighters freed both men, with Lehs escaping earlier and Hartshorn later found beneath debris on the east end. The incident prompted a rescue operation as responders worked to pull them free.
