Loop Area Business Decline Linked to Overbuilding and Lindale Plaza Growth
Cedar Rapids leaders cite 12 percent overbuilding of retail space citywide and Lindale Plaza expansion as factors driving several Loop firms out of business. Mayor Johnson convened a meeting with Chamber of Commerce and civic groups to explore remedies. A survey shows Cedar Rapids overbuilt since 1950 60s boom, with letters from discount chains seeking sites and rising land prices. Consensus notes tax inequities between dense Loop and outlying districts worsen the balance.
