Sheriff offers Cedar Rapids river patrol expansion after city cuts program
Linn County Sheriff’s Office plans to assume weekend river patrols at Ellis Park on the Cedar River after Cedar Rapids halted city patrols to save about 100000. Zeller notes new 17‑foot johnboat funded by Homeland Security grant to monitor near the Duane Arnold Energy Center, with reserve deputies earning only a dollar a year. Harbor neighbors support the move, hoping a county presence curbs boating mischief and helps police cabins along the river. The plan aims to boost coverage July and August with shows and fireworks events nearby.
