Iowa counties lose farmers as land shifts to smaller parcels
A 2001 survey shows 10 counties each shed about 10 farmers, totaling 1 280, with east central Iowa counties losing productive farmland. Susan Cowles of the Iowa Agricultural Statistics office notes fewer acres farmed even as more people reduce farm size or exit farming. Rural counties like Benton Cedar Clinton Iowa Jackson Jones Muscatine and Scott logged acreage declines ranging from 100 to 3 400 acres. The report says 40 acre parcels tempt new housing and farming choices, but the survey did not track new land use.
