Johnson vets housing project would be Iowa first HUD VASH set
Johnson County Iowa City and Veterans Affairs plan the first HUD VASH project in the state with a 15 unit property at 1102 Hollywood Blvd Iowa City bought in 2024 for 1.7 million. The county would own the property while the city leases it for 0 annually over 20 years and veterans pay 30 percent of income in rent. The Iowa City Housing Authority administers vouchers in partnership with the VA Health Care System. 95 HUD VASH vouchers exist in the city with 30 veterans on wait lists. 86 percent of beneficiaries earn under the area median income. The project aims to provide long term safe affordable housing leveraging VA referrals with no income minimum and utilities included. The plan faces Fair Housing Act constraints and concerns about prioritizing families. Repairs already approved include new furnaces air conditioners water heaters and electrical service across three renovated buildings.
