Belated justice in York raises hard questions on civil rights
Leonard Pitts argues that prosecutions of old racially motivated crimes expose America’s failure to confront its past. He cites York Pennsylvania mayor Charlie Robertson’s arrest over a 1969 killing as an example of delayed accountability and contrasts it with South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He cautions against viewing such cases as progress without broader truth, urging society to confront historic wounds rather than bury them.
