Copter crash ends Mason’s law enforcement career
Kevin Mason, 39, retired by Cedar Rapids Police after a Hughes 269 helicopter crash on Aug 19 1996. The crash, caused by a broken air filter housing, led to back injuries and a medical disability ruling. Mason had flown many shifts and says he enjoyed his work but may not regain full mobility. He notes the FAA cleared Cedar Rapids’ Hughes 269 fleet after grounding. Spatial details and reflections on fleet capabilities are included, with Mason expressing no hard feelings toward the department.
