Lawmen raid marijuana farm near Millersburg
The Iowa County Sheriff's Department raided a 120 acre farm five miles west of Millersburg seizing 445 cultivated cannabis plants with potential weight of 2,225 pounds and street value about 1.78 million dollars. Also found were other marijuana plants a half pound of pure marijuana drug paraphernalia a loaded revolver and a loaded shotgun. Authorities assisted by Williamsburg Marengo police and the Iowa State Patrol. Sheriff Jim Stockett said the operation was part of a renewed priority on drug enforcement.

Thai cook rewarded for aiding Tehran hostages escape
Somchai Sriwaewaett a 39 year old Thai cook who fed and sheltered five American diplomats for seven days during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis is being considered for a new life in the United States. U.S. officials say the diplomats asked Senator Paul Tsongas to push a bill to allow Somchai his wife and three children to emigrate. The idea originated with Victor Tomseth who arranged secret messages and coordinated the rescue from Iran. Somchai said he followed Tomseth’s Thai language coded instructions and later helped the Americans reach safety with a Canadian embassy car.
