Four Tractor Emissaries Arrive in Cuba for Prisoner Exchange

A four member American mission arrived in Havana to negotiate a tractors for prisoners exchange with Fidel Castro's government. The group including three university professors and a labor union machinery expert met officials at the Institute of Agrarian Reform and later Dorticos. A protester in Miami accused them of violating the Logan Act as police kept him apart.

Merchants Bank Employee Charged in Embezzlement Case

Mary Jane LeMasters 40 of 1065 Twelfth St NE was arraigned in Cedar Rapids federal court on a 3 count information alleging embezzlement of 1000 dollars from Merchants National Bank. She pled guilty to all counts and awaited sentencing with further investigations noted.

Fifteen Construction Workers Die In Mexican Truck Crash

In Minatitlan Mexico fifteen construction workers were killed when a truck plunged into a ravine on Monday. Rescue teams recovered the bodies as investigators examined the wreckage for causes and safety lapses related to the deadly incident.

Car and Train Collision Kills 16 Year Old

Kenneth Albaugh of Mechanicsville, 16, died in a crash east of Lisbon when his northbound car struck a westbound North Western freight train at a clear crossing. He was a Mechanicsville High School sophomore. Funeral arrangements are by Morgan Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon.

Cedar Rapids flash flood swamps Cedar Rapids streets

Cars were tossed like bobbers as 4 foot walls of water flooded Cedar Rapids southeast side near Second Third and Park. Ronald Rodgers escaped from a submerged car near Park Court SE after its rammed water carried it away, describing the scene as worse than any naval experience. Continued on Page 5.

Thunderstorm Finds Target in S. C.R.

A southeast Cedar Rapids flood from a regional storm caused extensive water damage. Second Avenue and Park Court SE saw five feet of water with a car overturned. Downtown stores on First Avenue suffered backwash damage with losses estimated between $19,800 and $22,100.

Cedar Rapids Teen Drowns in Sand Pit Near Palo

Richard L. Strickler 19 of 22514 Fourteenth Ave SE Cedar Rapids drowned Monday night while swimming in a sand pit two miles east of Palo. He went under at about 9 pm and deputies recovered his body at 10:15 pm. This followed the prior Cedar Rapids area drowning of 11 year old Gene Benedik at Palisades Kepler state park. Strickler was born Jan 30 1942 in Delhi and moved to Cedar Rapids in 1959 from Hermanville Michigan. Surviving relatives include his mother Lillie Bluecher and father Wesley.

Kennedy cancels speech to aid back recovery

President Kennedy called off a lunch address to the U S conference of mayors to speed his back's recovery. Press Secretary Salinger stressed the change shows no deterioration, just time to improve. Kennedy walks on crutches and hopes to discard them soon as doctors consult with Dr Travell and Dr Wade.

Scarbeck Accused of Leaking Secrets to Polish Reds

Irvin Scarbeck a 41 year old foreign service officer was arrested on a charge of passing classified security information to a Polish Communist agent. He served as second secretary at the Warsaw embassy since Dec 14 1958. He was arraigned on bond set at 50000 and faces up to 10000 fine or ten years imprisonment. The case may go before a federal grand jury within 10 days.

Kennedy Proposes Broad Jobless Insurance Overhaul

President Kennedy urged Congress to vastly expand unemployment compensation with higher benefits and longer duration funded by payroll tax increases. The plan, potentially in effect by 1968, would extend coverage to about 50 million workers, raise state benefits, and require job retraining for continued benefits.
