Pioneer 10 leaves Neptune orbit heading into interstellar space
Pioneer 10, launched 11 years ago, will pass Neptune and depart the solar system, first manmade object to do so. It travels 30,000 mph, sending eight watt signals 4 hours 20 minutes to Earth, with a radioisotope power supply expected to last another decade. The craft has mapped Jupiter, studied its magnetosphere, and could help detect gravity waves, while Pioneer 11 moves toward the heliosphere’s edge.
