Plot to poison Nelson Mandela surfaced in apartheid era trials

Cape Town AP reports a scientist testified before a Truth and Reconciliation panel about plans by Andre Immelman and others to administer thallium to Nelson Mandela to damage brain function. The scheme aimed to disable Mandela, not kill him, during his imprisonment and after his 1990 release. Mandela later led the ANC to victory in 1994.

Mandela release tied to health in apartheid era notes

A 1986 State Security Council report suggested Mandela could be freed only when in such poor health he could not lead the ANC, a claim disputed by lawyer Jaap Celliers. In earlier Truth Commission testimony, scientists described a poison factory era tied to government poisonings. Basson later resigned from the army in 1993 after a report cited him in poisons and chemical bombs.
